All About Bats... a simple guide |
Bats serve the earth, they are
kind of like the bug police. Bats fly around and catch bugs using a process
called echolocation. Thus, they reduce pests. Fewer pests mean less reliance
on pesticides, which makes our water and earth cleaner. Some (Pallid Bat)
even eat scorpions.
UNTRUE MYTHS
*Bats don't get caught in people's
hair. In fact, they can detect something as thin as your hair in total
darkness.
*They rarely ever carry rabies.
However, never try to touch one, unless supervised by a bat handler.
*They are more technologically
advanced than us, considering that they use echolocation.
ARE THEY BLIND?
No, they can see, and they also
use echolocation, which is like seeing with sound.
DO BATS A FAVOR
Always remember that they are somewhat
harmless creatures.
Many movies, and books do not portray
bats correctly. However, if you do happen to see a harmed bat lying on
the ground DO NOT pick it up. It could be sick, and may hurt you.
Instead call a professional like an animal control officer, etc.
Bats are in the order Chiroptera, meaning hand-wing
